Spread the Word

You’ll want to spread the word about your event. You could do this as a method for recruiting volunteers, or as a means to get the attention of sponsors. The better publicized your event is around campus or town, the more likely you will be able to gain support for your service projects, today and in the future.

Here are a few tips for where and how to spread the word:

  • Flyers, posters, or banners
    1. Post information about your event around campus.
  • Media campaigns
    1. Publicize through your campus radio, TV, or newspaper. Don’t forget that many off-campus media outlets also provide free Public Service Announcements (PSA’s) or offer a community calendar.
  • Press releases
    1. Don’t know how to write a press release? Work with your local Hands on Action Center, or a marketing, journalism, or English major on campus to create a press release for off-campus media outlets.
  • Mass e-mail distribution
    1. Send info to everyone you know, as well as listservs you’re on. You should also send e-mails to specific groups you want to know about and/or participate in your event.
  • On-line calendars, forums & blog sites
    1. Does your university have a electronic bulletin board? Post announcements wherever students are most likely to see them. Don’t forget Facebook, Myspace, and any local publications or community websites that have online calendars.
  • Public announcements
    1. Find out how to get announcements made at sporting events or other happenings on campus. Or, simply ask permission to stand up in any of your lecture classes and make a personal announcement.

However you decide to publicize your event, remember to always include contact information at the very least. Be aware of how other things are advertised around town or on campus, and don’t be afraid to be creative.

Here are some example fliers and advertisements that you can download and edit them to suit your needs.
