On January 15, 2007, Hands On Memphis’ Hands On Schools MLK Day project took place at the Memphis Academy of Health and Sciences (MAHS). MAHS was established as a charter school by the Memphis Chapter of the 100 Black Men.  Since establishment, the school has rapidly worked to improve the overall academic performance of students by partnering with Volunteer Memphis and 100 Black Men to provide a tutoring program.  Recently, the school acquired a new facility which has served to further establish the spirit and identity of MAHS students and staff.

Accomplishments:
  • Volunteers helped paint student inspired quotes and murals throughout the school capturing the social justice theme.
  • Repainting and refurbishing school restrooms,
  • Refurbishing teacher's lounges
  • Renovating the schools gym
  • Painting cafeteria space with health/sciences themed murals.
  • Repainting halls throughout the building,
  • Constructing an outdoor classroom
  • Painting the school’s mascot  in the entry way and in the school gym.

Volunteers helped improve the learning environment by restoring the school's library and painting tutoring rooms. Federal Express and The Home Depot’s collaboration helped make this project successful.
