Hands On Greater Portland’s Hands On Schools Earth Day/National Youth Service Day project took place on April 21, 2007 at Vernon Elementary School. This Hands On Schools project served as the catalyst for the school to engage all members in the neighborhood and support the revitalization of both the school and the community. A total of 600 volunteers helped make the project a huge success, impacting 404 students. Volunteers painted the interior common spaces of the school (a total of 9 hallways/offices and the cafeteria - 3303 sq ft). They also helped with the 2 signature projects; garden installations. A landscape architecture firm created plans and volunteers assisted in installing two learning gardens. The first, a native plant garden, featured paths and a storm water swale. The second, a community vegetable garden, featured 32 raised beds, 3 of which were wheelchair accessible. The soccer field also was re-seeded and repaired and the landscape was pruned, weeded and cleaned.
 
The most significant result of the project was the mobilization of their community. The original goal was to recruit 400 volunteers, but the school ended up with over 600. Most of the volunteers were neighbors, school families, and other community members. The relationship with the PTA, the grassroots recruitments efforts of the students (many went door-to-door asking for help), as well as support from teachers and the administration resulted in a very diverse group of volunteers contributing to the success of the project.
