For their Hands On Schools Earth Day/ National Youth Service Day, LA Works implemented school renovation projects at both Charles R. Drew Middle School on April 14, 2007, and Bethune Middle School on April 21, 2007. (Each of which schools were yearlong approaches to Hands On Schools Transformational Community Engagement projects).
Drew Middle School and Bethune Middle School currently support families in the Compton community whose family income falls 130-185% below the federal poverty line. Both schools are located in area most known as South Central, LA, with long histories steeped in the community. Drew was built over 100 years ago and Bethune in 1925, each housing the communities oldest and only thriving agricultural gardens. However, both schools are located in the center of the corridor of the 710 and 405 freeways that leave students to extremely high levels of carbon emissions. Over the next year students will learn advocacy skills that will assist their campaign for more green spaces in their play/school communities.
For their Hands On Schools project, LA works leveraged 100-150 volunteers per project to design a community garden, complete murals, and paint classrooms and halls/corridors throughout their campuses which reflect the imaginations and vibrancy of their student populations and communities. They also helped refurbish a number of schools gardens and outdoor learning environments, paint student designed murals, lead environmental advocacy programs, paint classrooms and halls throughout the school, and implement an after school programs that fosters greater understanding and appreciation for environmental issues
